Cold Weather Dog Breeds
Don't think the fur coat is enough to keep them warm; in fact, most dogs can't handle long periods of time outdoors in chilly weather. Unless, pet owners adopt one of these types of dog breeds:
- Greater Swiss Mountain Dog
- German Shepherd
- Chow Chow
- Bernese Mountain Dog
- Anatolian Shepherd
- American Eskimo Dog
- Alaskan Malamute
- Akita
On days above 45 degrees, most medium and large dogs can handle dog walking and outside playtime in the fenced-in backyard for up to 30 minutes. However, once temperatures drop below freezing, it's time to bring dogs inside after 15 minutes. If the temperatures drop below 0 degrees, no dog should be outside for longer than a restroom break.
