Mnt Lion Attacks Cat

SAN MATEO COUNTY: A mountain lion was spotted walking through a California neighborhood when suddenly it attacked a cat. It ran away shortly after being spotted; and the condition of the attacked kitty is unknown.

There are an estimated 30,000 mountain lions in the western part of the United States with 4,000 to 6000 statewide. That means there are approximately 10 mountain lions per 100 square miles.

With the exception of humans, the mountain lion has the largest range of any mammal in the Western Hemisphere. They are found from Canada to Argentina. In North America, they can be found from British Columbia and southern Alberta to California and Texas.

Today viable, breeding cougar populations are found in just the sixteen states of Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming,Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico, South Dakota, North Dakota, Texas, and Florida.

This is a friendly reminder to protect pets from wildlife encounters with pet fencing that is at least 6 feet high to stop coyotes, wolves and deer from jumping into yards. Because mountain lions can leap 15 feet up a tree, and 40 feet running start, pets can only be protected with a complete, four-sided fence with a top. A 12 feet tall cat fence works well with overhang extenders; or an electric fence.
