National Cat Health Month
It's National Cat Health Month
Each new year, we seem to make the same New Year's Resolution; and that's to improve our health. But, instead of our health, we need to focus on the health of our pet cats. Here are a few cat health tips that cat owners can do now to improve animal health and wellness.
Diet Plan For Cats
According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, nearly 59% of cats are overweight or obese. That equates to over 50 million cats in the United States! Cats that eat too much food are put at risk for weight-related disorders that exceed obesity such as arthritis and breathing problems.
The average healthy cat weighs approximately 10 pounds; and should not exceed this weight. If you own a fat cat, put your cat on the diet; and do the following:
- Feed cats highly digestible, meat-based foods;
- Increase the proportion of canned and raw foods in the cat's daily diet;
- Feed a dry food properly formulated for weight loss;
- Provide several feeding areas in households with more than one cat.
Exercises For Cats
Like dogs, cats like to run and play; and there are many exercises that cats can do on their own or with their owner to improve cat health. As cats get older, strengthening their core and hind legs will become increasingly more important. Give cats a scratching post that they can use to stretch out their arms; or build a cat tower for cats to pounce from level to level. Lastly, play ball; or, give them yarn to play with; and let them play with other animals from inside a secure cat fence.
Neuter Cats
While we love kittens, it's really important to neuter cats. If domestic cat owners aren't careful, stray and homeless cats can unite with your cat while outside. With over 60 million feral cats in the United States, we, as pet owners, need to work together to control the number of homeless newborn cats.
Routine Vet Visits
A yearly check-up is necessary to keep your cat's health at its best. Be sure to tell your veterinarian about changes in your cat's behavior; mood; and weight; and be sure to vaccinate cats for rabies and other potentially life-threatening diseases.
Groom Cats Regularly
Cat brushing, while challenging at times, is important. Note changes in their skin including rashes, infections and ticks that may be hiding underneath their fur.
Summary
This February, pay extra attention to your cat's health and; work to improve their lives. Remember, cats can live up to 16 years - even longer!
