Coyotes Will Eat Cats
Coyotes are born hunters; and in the spring when they are hunting for food, they will choose to eat anything that will fit inside their mouths. Research shows that coyotes will eat anything they find from garbage cans and home properties including food wrappers; fallen fruits; corn-based foods; and oh yes, cats.
Cats are a desirable snack for coyotes; but have no fear, there are preventative steps that pet owners can take to protect their feline friends. Here are two fence types that can be used:
Metal Hexagonal Fence
A steel hex fence contains 1' x 1' mesh dimensions that are too tiny for a coyote to bite through. Having PVC-coating on the fence will add a secondary layer of protection against chew marks, as well. This type of metal yard fencing is used for coyote management by chicken owners and will keep out rabbits, deer and other pesky wildlife.
For best results, choose a 6' coyote fence.
Cat Fencing
Cat Fences come with overhang extenders to deter wildlife from jumping in (and domestic cats from escaping). Fence for cats are available in 6' and 7.5' high systems and can be used to secure dogs in the property line, too.
Conclusion
Coyotes scout for food year-round solo or in packs; and they will not say 'no' to small cats in yards. To protect feline companion pets from coyote attacks, pet owners will need to be proactive in installing a wildlife fence that is at least 6 feet tall or a cat fence system.
