Dogs Kill Rabid Raccoon

Two pet dogs killed a rabid raccoon in the yard of a South Carolina residence and the news has shook the town.

Spring is a dangerous time of year for pets when wildlife leave hibernation, and are entering motherhood, protecting their young. Not only are bears hungry for foods; but female coyotes will deliver coyote pups in March/April and then fawns (baby deer) will be born in April-July. Both, coyotes and deer, will not actively try to kill pets, but rather protect their young from animals that get too close.

Wildlife are looking to eat this season; and they will not say 'no' to the meat of dogs and cats. Therefore, pet owners will need to separate wildlife from domestic animals either by keeping pets indoors all day or with pet fencing that is tall enough to prevent wildlife encounters.
