Is Weed Bad For Cats?
With the legalization of recreational marijuana in 11 states (Illinois latest to approve legalized weed in the state), plus Washington, D.C., pets are being exposed to the pungent odor of the cannabis plant due to inhaling secondhand smoke. Marijuana can make dogs ill; but will not cause long-term effects. But, how about the effects on cats when ingesting marijuana smoke or eating cannabis leaves?
According to ASPCA, cats that may taste a weed brownie or inhale marijuana smoke may experience anxiety, low blood pressure, sleepiness, excitation and dilated pupils. Other symptoms to watch out for in cats include:
- Uncoordinated movements
- Vomiting
- Depression
- Seizures, sometimes comas!
Cats that are experiencing these symptoms must be taken to a veterinarian for medical treatment and evaluation. While cannabis oils are sometimes used to calm pets' nerves, marijuana has higher THC and effects that can harm pets. It's best to keep them away from the cannabis plant at all times.
