Get Pets Vaccinated!

August is declared to be National Immunization Awareness Month; and it's for good reason. Summer is when pets are most frequently attacked by wildlife (note: eep them safe at home with fencing*) and are prone to such diseases including rabies. 

Vaccines provide immunity against one or several diseases that can lessen the severity or prevent certain diseases altogether. Experts agree that widespread use of vaccinations within the last century has prevented death and disease in millions of animals. 

Puppies receive most of their vaccinations every two to four weeks until they are at least 14 weeks old. Some vaccinations are given as a combination, such as the DHLPPC, which helps protect against distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parainfluenza, parvo and corona. In cats, some of these vaccinations are required by law. It's best that pet owners check in with vets each year to see if pets are in-need of updated shots. 

Pet owners should take their pups outside for the first time after their first round of vaccinations - usually around the seventh week of birth.
