Thanksgiving Treats - Pets
Homeowners may be overwhelmed this week in preparation for Turkey Day - preparing the house for guests and making sure the turkey is thawed out; but dogs are more excited than ever. They know that Thanksgiving is when they will be eating well thanks to babies (and adults, honestly) dropping food on the ground. While some Thanksgiving treats may be bad for dog health, making them very sick, some are okay to feed to pets this holiday.
Here are Thanksgiving meals okay to feed pets:
- Turkey breast - minus the fatty trim*
- Vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, celery, carrots and sweet potato) as long as they aren't covered in jams or heavy butter.
- Salmon
- Cheese
- Stuffing - minus onions, garlic and raisins. These add-ons can lead dogs to anemia or pancreatic and liver damage if ingested in high amounts.
Reminder of Thanksgiving foods to avoid feeding pets:
- Fat Trimmings or fatty foods
- Turkey skin
- Turkey bones
- Corn on the cob
- Chocolate or pies (sugar and cocoa are no-goes for pets)
- Nuts
- Grapes and Raisins
- Onions and Garlic
Give pets small amounts of Thanksgiving foods to see how their bodies react to the foods. Have a safe and wonderful Turkey Day 2019!
