Utah Cat Adoption Crisis
(KUTV) — The Humane Society of Utah is asking for the public's help to end the 'cat and kitten crisis' along the Wasatch Front.
The organization hopes to find homes for 400 cats in the next four weeks, according to a post on its Facebook page.
Starting Monday, adoption fees for cats and kittens will be waived.
The Humane Society of Utah hopes this effort will help the animals find good homes and help local overburden shelters.
Recently, animal shelters have reported an influx of kitten and cats.
Temma Martin with Best Friends Animal Society in Sugar House told 2News earlier this month that she has heard shelters, that have been no kill or low kill for years, are now facing the decision because of the influx.
“If they are full and they don’t have foster homes to put the animals in, if they are not getting adopted fast enough, it means that they take them in but at some point, some that have already been there are going to be killed,” she said. “This is going to set us back on the goal of making Utah no kill.”
