When Puppies Teeth

Puppies are adorable; but what is not so adorable is when puppies begin teething and alleviate the pain by chewing furniture. When does teething stop and what can pet owners do to help rid the pain?

Puppies teeth during the first 3-6 weeks of birth. Growing teeth is painful for dogs which is why they choose to attach themselves to hard surfaces such as the legs on table chairs. To help sooth the pain, pet owners can give pets ice cubes; frozen fruits; cold bagels and even cold carrots to suck on. Dogs can also chew on small toys, such as rubber balls - however, watch pups, as these dog toys could be choking hazards if small in size.

When puppies are outside, they may try to alleviate the pain by biting on fences. Make sure the yard fence is strong enough to handle the chew marks. If the dog is small, and will remain small, a plastic fence will be fine, as the breaking strength is between 650-750 pounds. If the dog will eventually grow to be a biter/chewer, a metal fence should be considered early on. 

Be understanding and sympathetic to dogs during these hard few weeks of life. Teething is painful but there are ways to alleviate the pain.
